EVENT DETAILS

 

  • Designed to be unlike any other community event, and held on a Saturday morning so more people can attend (Oct 1, 2016).
     

  • Highly interactive with local panelists and audience participation in all discussions. Mobile phones and whiteboards will be used to collect audience feedback in real time.
     

  • Everyone will be invited (but not required) to make an action pledge:  a promise to do something community-minded, no matter how big or small. Examples: volunteer for an event, donate to a food bank, help a neighbor, clean a green space, eat healthy, vote in the election, anything! Action pledges will be captured on paper, through mobile devices, and in personal photos.
     

  • Short and focused half-day event with unlimited online followup through goCapeBreton.com.  
    Event will be videotaped and made available online after the event (not live streamed).  Action pledges will be captured and posted online where discussion will continue on all community topics for the months to come.

     

  • Participants will feel good DURING and AFTER the event by the collaborative community engagement and meaningful actions that will result in moving our community forward.

 
  • The inaugural event was held on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Highland Arts Theatre on Bentinck Street, Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada.
     

  • Attendance is free and open to all.

  • The name of the event reflects the interactive and action-oriented focus of the event, while adopting an endearing colloquial term well-known to Cape Bretoners.

The success of a community is not dependent on big wins. It's about the small things that happen every day between friends, neighbors, coworkers, and community. Many little wins add up to a big win.

FORMAT & SCHEDULE

 

FORMAT

 

  • Event is free for all ages.
     

  • 4 sessions at less than 1 hour per session.  
    Each session may cover several related topics.

     

  • Each session starts with a short presentation by the moderator to frame the topic.
     

  • A small panel with begin the discussion with each person having 2 minutes to comment.
     

  • Audience is invited to share comments or pose questions by speaking at a microphone (2 min time limit) or by using a mobile device.
     

  • Action Pledges will be gathered throughout the event.  Participants can make an action pledge on paper, through their mobile device, or in a photo booth.  (Action Pledges are voluntary and no pressure will be applied to anyone.)

The role of the panelists is to help ignite audience thought and discussion. Panelists are selected based upon their activities in the community, and not based on where they work or their professional status. We want panelists to share their personal opinions, not represent any particular organization.
